Bloom Township Seniors picnic, dance and reminisce over a brew
August 10, 2008
BY ANGELA CAPUTO Staff writers They pulled up a beer truck, unloaded boxes upon boxes of chicken lunches, and scores of senior citizens flocked to the annual Bloom Township picnic - an event they say is too good to pass up.
"Oh honey, the seniors love it," said Audrey Gyger of Chicago Heights, who has missed the event only once over the past decade.
"And the music, you've got to love the music man," the 70-year-old said while bopping along to the Village People's song "YMCA," wildly waving her arms and clapping to the beat.
For the senior crowd, the picnic at Glenwood's Veterans Memorial Park is a can't-miss event year after year. That's because the township brings in activities, a raffle and live music, including crowd pleasers like "The Chicken Dance" that inspired even some of the shiest people in the crowd to begin tapping their feet and slapping tabletops early Thursday afternoon. read more...

BLOOM TOWNSHIP Chicago Heights couple take top spots in senior spelling bee
June 22, 2008 By David Schwab, staff writer
Hopefully Dale Jacobs didn't get any "schadenfreude" when he outshone his wife at the Bloom Township Senior Spelling Bee June 12 in Chicago Heights.
If he did experience any "satisfaction at the misfortune of others," his wife, Jean, may have missed his reaction, if she was "strabismic," meaning she had an eye disorder in which she was cross-eyed.
The Chicago Heights couple finished first and second in the third annual competition, styled exactly like the children's spelling bee broadcast nationally on ESPN each year.
This one was relatively small, with only seven competitors.
"Strabismic" was the word Jean missed at the end, and "schadenfreude" was one Dale was studying for the next round.
By placing first and second, both qualified for the regional tournament to be held Monday in Park Ridge. From there, it could be on to state.
The couple, a conservative-looking, quiet pair, came from careers that have equipped them to be good spellers.
Dale is retired, but in his working days was managing editor for the World Book Encyclopedia's Chicago office.
There, he edited scholars' work, making it fit for average readers to read.
And Jean's no slouch. She works part-time for a microbiologist, helping him produce scientific essays, among other responsibilities.
Still, in the time leading up to regionals, "we should probably do more (studying)," Jean said jokingly.
The couple have three grown daughters and five grandchildren. They enjoy reading, spending time with their family and are avid Chicago Cubs fans.
Dale religiously does the New York Times crossword puzzles; Jean's keen on the Sudoku puzzles.
"I've always had a love of words," Dale said.
Both are mildly nervous, but excited, for the regional bee.
"Sometimes, you just take it for granted (when you're spelling words in the competition). You've really got to think what you're saying," Dale said.
Both Dale and Jean said this was the first spelling bee in which either had competed since they were in eighth grade. At that time, Dale took second place in his county in Iowa.
Maybe in Illinois this time around, he'll do one better.
